Looks like he got pepper-sprayed. I've been sprayed a couple times at street protests and it hurts. Your eyes clamp shut. And you can't run away from it. Throwing water on your face just makes it worse.

You really got in there and captured this well. I agree that a slight crop might give this even more impact, although it's still fine like this.
